The rebuilt bus station opened in October 2004 as part of a major regeneration of the south side of Wednesbury town centre, which was completed three years later when a new Morrisons supermarket opened adjacent to the bus station. The Caryatid Gateway features two carved stone caryatids, one male and one female, each representing different aspects of Wednesbury history. The female figure represents Æthelflæd, daughter of King Alfred, who fortified Wednesbury against the Danes. The male figure represents a tube maker, Wednesbury being famous for the manufacture of tubes, the process having been patented in the nineteenth century by Cornelius Whitehouse. The tube reference is continued in the polished stainless steel inverted tubular arch 'carried' by the caryatids.
