3. Skansen

At the Skansen museum you can learn about five centuries of rural traditions and social life in Sweden, spot wildlife native to Scandinavia and take part in Christmas and Midsummer celebrations. Between 1833 and 1901, Artur Hazelius purchased 150 historical Swedish buildings and relocated them to Stockholm’s Djurgården Island. Opened in 1891, this is one of the world’s oldest outdoor museums.

4. Vasa Museum

At the Vasa Museum (Vasamuseet) you can learn about the history of a 17th-century battleship, from its creation to its rescue and preservation. In 1628 the Vasa battleship set sail from Stockholm’s harbor on its maiden voyage; however, it capsized just minutes after departure. Over 300 years later, marine archeologists rescued the ship and in 1990 made it a public museum.

5. Stockholm Palace

Stockholm Royal Palace (Stockholms Slott) is a Baroque-style palace located in Stockholm’s Old Town. Built in the 1700s, today it’s an official residence of the Swedish royal family. Visit the seven-floor palace to explore some of the 600 rooms, find a collection of Italian sculptures and watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony.
