Astride the meandering Manning River, this enchanting town is the perfect base for exploring national parks, stunning beaches and fertile valleys.

Taree lies at the heart of the picturesque Manning Valley agricultural region. Inland from the Mid-North Coast, Taree is positioned between verdant rainforests and beautiful beaches. Explore the historic town centre on a heritage trail, visit the art gallery or take a scenic drive through the region’s majestic forest reserves.

Experience Taree’s laid-back town centre as you wander around cafés, shops and historic churches. See the Big Oyster. The town’s cultural offerings don’t stop there find additional artworks by local and touring artists at the Manning Regional Art Gallery.

Explore the pretty Manning River, a gorgeous river system providing the Manning Valley region with high-quality water for farming oysters and produce. Recreational fishing on the Manning River is a favourite local pastime, so find out what’s biting and try it yourself.

Take a self-guided driving tour of the surrounding national parks and reserves. In Coorabakh National Park, find tranquil picnic spots. An hour northwest is the cascading Ellenborough Falls. Check out Tapin Tops National Park and the fragrant sub-tropical rainforest at Wingham Brush Nature Reserve.

Beyond lush meadows and winding riverbanks, reach the ocean within a few minutes’ drive. Swim at Saltwater Beach and watch dolphins playing offshore at Diamond Beach. Pack your fishing rods or surfboard and take on the breaks at Old Bar and Wallabi Point. In nearby Crowdy Head, see a historic lighthouse and find an ideal vantage point for spotting whales in winter. In Harrington, also close by, embark on the Harrington Self-Guided Heritage Walk, a 1.7-kilometre (1-mile) trail that leads past historic and natural landmarks in the town and on the foreshore.

Taree is located on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales. Reach Taree from Newcastle, the closest large city, within a 2-hour drive. A regional airport and a station on the North Coast Railway Line connect the town to other destinations along the coast. Enjoy the sand and surf in summer or visit during winter for a relaxing culinary trail through the Manning Valley.
