The town of Sulphur is the perfect base for exploring southern Oklahoma’s loveliest areas of protected countryside. Discover gorgeous hiking trails, creeks, lakes, hills and swimming holes in the surrounding area. For a change of pace, learn about the strong Native American heritage of this part of Oklahoma.

Begin your visit to Sulphur by delving into the area’s past at the Chickasaw Cultural Center. This beautifully presented attraction preserves and presents the fascinating Native American history of this part of Oklahoma. The museum is set up in a very lively and engaging way that is sure to appeal to children as well as adults. Learn about the traditions and lifestyle of the Chickasaw people as you wander through a full-scale recreation of a Chickasaw village. Along the way, see demonstrations of dance and live reenactments. Pose for a photo with the dramatic statue of a Chickasaw warrior standing outside the center.

Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy another one of Sulphur’s greatest assets, the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Centered on a large, clean lake that is perfect for swimming, fishing and boating, this protected natural park is a favorite with hikers, campers and nature lovers. The scenic space is dotted with swimming holes and its peaks and valleys offer beautiful views. Stop to admire the impressive herd of bison that roam the valley at the Bison Pasture.

The landscape around Sulphur is full of natural treasures. Spend a day exploring Turner Falls Park to the south, where picturesque Honey Creek leads into a set of idyllic natural swimming pools. The park is another great place to go hiking, with scenic trails that wind all over the hillsides.

With so many outdoor attractions to explore, Sulphur is an ideal summertime destination. Drive here from Oklahoma City in about 90 minutes. Come prepared for an active vacation. Remember to bring a camera to capture the area’s incredible vistas.
