Relish the outdoor setting of this charming city which features a park and chapel dedicated to dogs, a snowmobile adventure park and a maple syrup farm.

St. Johnsbury is a quaint Vermont city just south of the Canadian border. The municipality is home to a sprawling green landscape with parks, adventure tours and plenty of outdoor activities. Visit the many museums and galleries in the city center. The highlight of the area is a vast park and chapel dedicated to dogs and pet owners.

Locals know the city, which dates back as far as 1760, as “St. Jay” for short. It has hot summers and freezing winters with heavy snowfalls.

Explore 150 acres (60.7 hectares) of scenic hiking trails and hills at Dog Mountain. Bring your own dog to make local canine friends. Take your pet on a walk up and down grassy knolls with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Enjoy a picnic with family and friends in the tranquil park. Just remember to bring enough food for your four-legged companion.

The park has an exceptional Dog Chapel. Listen to prayers for pets that have passed away. Read emotional notes alongside photos on the walls from mourning pet owners. Purchase works of art from the gift shop.

Drive a few miles north for a thrilling escapade at NEK Adventures. Take guided tours of the stunning landscape on snowmobiles. Receive training from professionals and take one of the vehicles out on your own.

Sample the delight of pancakes covered with locally made maple syrup at the Maple Grove Farms of Vermont. Learn about the process of making the syrup and select maple gift products to take home.

While in the region, you may want to taste other Vermont specialties, such as tourtière, a meat pie, and poutine, a dish of fries dressed in gravy and cheese curds. Locally made cheddar cheese is also popular in the area.

St. Johnsbury is about 150 miles (241.4 kilometers) south of Montreal, Canada.

Come to St. Johnsbury for an alternative outdoor experience, featuring dog tributes, spectacular vistas and snowmobile adventures.
