"Needlessly complicated check in process - why did I have to supply my ID? There is no UK legal requirement for this and most places don't do it. The booking app has my details if anything goes wrong. My room (6) was in a dark lower basement, not listed as such. I asked for upstairs room which was available but it did not have a cooking stove. "Once we got to the hotel (road closed so couldn't use the hotel carpark so a bit of a nightmare!) we found the staff very helpful, our room was lovely, very spacious and clean. The only negative were the pillows, it would have been nice to have a choice of different 'plumpness'! We found them a bit too hard so didn't have the best sleep"

"They need to upgrade their fire alarm system. A known fault of the alarm going off when someone showers at 0630 on a Sunday is not welcomed. But what is more disturbing is that the alarm was cancelled within in seconds, on the basis they "knew" is was the shower. There was no way that someone physically checked two floors above reception that the cause of the alarm was a shower. Guests did not know whether to excavate or not. This needs to be addressed immediately."

"I'm confused by the 10/10 reviews making New Continental Hotel out to be the Hilton. The staff were friendly and accomodating, however the room I had was small, the beds even smaller, the decor dated, the curtains from the 90s covered in cobwebs, the carpet in dire need of a clean, the TV antenna didn't work, the bathroom very basic and most surfaces in need of a coat of paint of replacing. The single pane windows kept out no noise, which due to the busy road outside was very noisy with the local boy racers and motorbikes at all hours. On the second night of my stay there was a 'footballers presentation' event downstairs, meaning lots of shouting and swearing outside the window until gone 11pm, which wasn't great for my 6 year old. The room was also like a sauna, owing to no A/C or ventilation, except the useless windows. Breakfast was ok, and I just about got into the last parking space on the Saturday night. There are better options around."

"We stayed at Harbour Hotel in Padstow and ate in the restaurant two nights during our stay. Then the same for Harbour Hotel in Salcombe. if you’re looking for a food experience then Padstow wins hands down. I would rate the food in Salcombe as good but Padstow is another level or two up; perhaps it’s the Rick Stein effect………"

"Room was clean, we did have to report a couple of things but was sorted straightaway, balcony was ok but disappointing that you have to climb through window to access it, plenty of room and handy tea and coffee facilities. The hotel has a beautiful layout with lots of different seating areas, even a little library, to sit and relax anytime of the day, and beautiful sea views. Staff were really friendly and helpful. The outside pool is nice and plenty of loungers available. The spa is down stairs and was a nice little treat, staff really nice. Would recommend a stay here , it is located at the top of Torquay with beautiful views of the bay and a five minute walk into the start of the town with regular bus services which is outside the hotel. Breakfast is lovely choice of continental and full English. Just a few negatives: a damp smell on the third floor was quite unpleasant and could occasionally smell in room, a little daily tidy of the pool area, a little tlc inside would freshen the hotel up, parking could be awkward but right next to train station, so parking ok and the main entrance signage does let the appearance down.not all lifts were working and occasionally signs up to say not working, and when on the 3rd floor with only one lift working to that floor, was disappointing, but they did actually work, so unsure why the signs were put up, All in all a lovely pleasant stay and would recommend"
