Drakesbad Guest Ranch
8/10 Good
"Quaint and rustic retreat with wonderful people making the experience even better. Access to Mt Lassen Volcanic Park, trails and thermal pools. Close to Lake Almanor. Built in 1910, rooms in the lodge are small, only a bed & folding chair, but downstairs a large communal area offers multiple comfortable seating areas - big wingback leather chairs and a deep couch. Game rack in the corner, large wood stove in the middle. Some places show their age - the sagging deck- But care is taken. Bathrooms have a sink & toilet. Showers are available in a funky bathhouse down the path. If you don’t eat what’s on offer in the cafe, they’ll make you something else. Standard buffet breakfast - Belgian waffles, eggs, sausage, hash-browns, bagels, cereals. If the right people are working, you can get an espresso with nondairy milks, too. No outlets in the rooms - bring a battery for your CPAP or ask the staff for an attachment. Horses appeared well cared for."
The Black Forest Lodge
10/10 Excellent
"Don't judge by the exterior. Room was excellent. I think we had a handicapped accessible room but it was very roomy with king bed. Huge shower with instant hot water and great water pressure. TV, good a/c, Keurig coffee maker, small refrigerator with little freezer. Shampoo, conditioner etc. Comfortable bed. Close to Lassen Volcanic National Park. The only downside: we were in room 1 by the highway. Need better blackout curtains. Some road noise, but not terrible."
