Saguenay

A mountainous landscape with green fields, large boulders, and a clear blue sky.
A historic stone building with green doors and windows, a vintage train labeled "SAGUENAY POWER" in front, surrounded by lush greenery and trees.
A large brick house with a red roof and a porch. There is a sign in front with the text "La Commerce" and "Magasin Général".
Outdoor dining tables with umbrellas, people sitting and socializing, and buildings in the background.
An exhibition with historical artifacts, including a large projection of a wartime scene, a wooden boat model, and a red spinning wheel.

One of Quebec’s most scenic districts attracts outdoor lovers for its glacial landscape and wildlife. Hike, ski or cruise through the picturesque wilderness.

Visit Chicoutimi on the western end of the Saguenay Fjord amid a landscape of hills, cliffs, valleys and beaches. Ski, hike or sail through a glacial valley, see pods of whales and hear incredible stories of flood survival.

Explore the Saguenay Fjord National Park extending for more than 60 miles (100 kilometers) along the shores of the fjord. Embark on a backpacking trail through the glacial valley, kayak down the river or enjoy a boat cruise where you might come across beluga whales. Experience a guided night hike to see bats, owls and other nocturnal creatures. During winter, try skiing and snowshoeing.

Sunbathe on the beach of Centre de Plein Air du Portage and swim in Lake Kenagami. The outdoor center also has paddle boat and kayak rental.

Chicoutimi was an important fur-trading post in the 17th century and grew into an industrial center for the production of pulp and paper in the 19th century. To learn about the district’s history, visit the Pulperie de Chicoutimi Regional Museum. Then go to one of Chicoutimi’s most fascinating attractions, the Little White House. The small home survived the major flood of 1996 while the rest of its neighborhood was swept away.

In summer, residents of Chicoutimi like to celebrate the warm weather. From June to August the port area hosts many outdoor concerts and festivals. One of the most popular is the International Rhythms of the World Festival which brings in hundreds of artists from many countries.

Chicoutimi is 124 miles (200 kilometers) north of Quebec. The nearest airport is Bagotville. Get around the area by rental car, bus or the paid shuttle service which runs through the Saguenay region during the summer. Let Chicoutimi excite you with its scenery, nature and active and cultural pursuits.
