Flashing lights and neon signs indicate an array of stores, cocktail bars and restaurants just beyond the walls of the Old Town in the gay district of Ibiza.
The neighborhood of Sa Penya has developed from a quaint fishing village into a fascinating hub of culture, history and eclectic architecture. Its cobbled lanes run along the exterior of the ramparts that frame the historic center. Stroll outward from the Old Town quarter and immerse yourself in this fun and entertaining setting.
The district is known for its gay-friendly culture and atmosphere. You’ll often be able to spot drag acts among the street performers in this exciting hub. During summer, relax at trendy restaurants and bars into the early hours of the morning.
Stroll down one of the most attractive and chic streets on the island, the Carrer de la Mare de Déu. Lively restaurants and clubs line the cobbled lane, while colorful tattoo parlors and cocktail bars fill most corners. Stay on this street to explore the shops and clubs that remain open long after midnight.
Look around the Museu Casa Broner, the fashionable studio of its namesake German artist. Its interior is made up of 1960s décor, while the outside has a modern, layered look. Reach the eastern end of the district for the Plaza de Sa Torre, where you’ll have excellent views of the sea. The square and its tower straddle the southern side of the harbor.
Climb up some of the side streets that wind around the cliffs of Ibiza. Appreciate the vistas from the top. Put together a picnic to enjoy while you watch the sun set over the horizon. Take care of your belongings in these parts, especially at night.
Sa Penya rises on the hills just outside the Baluarte Santa Lucía on the eastern side of the walled city center. Accessible on foot from the old town quarter, it is a little southeast of the Ibiza Port and the Botafoch Marina. While in the area, visit the adjacent neighborhood of La Marina, where you’ll find the Mercat Vell (Old Market).
