Catch performances of Swedish theater and go behind the scenes on a guided tour to learn about the venue’s history and visit the wardrobes.

The Royal Dramatic Theater (Dramaten) is Sweden’s national theater, a place to watch classic, contemporary and child-friendly performing arts productions. King Gustav III established the Royal Dramatic Theater as an institution in 1788 with a mission to promote the talent of Swedish dramatists. In 1908, it moved to its current location, an ornate art nouveau building which features five stages.

For the complete theater experience, book tickets for a show in the 770-seat Main Stage, which has welcomed productions by acclaimed Swedish directors such as Ingmar Bergman and Olof Molander. King Gustav III also wrote seven plays for the theater before his passing in 1792. Plays are in Swedish only however, by downloading the theater’s app to your smartphone or tablet, you can access English subtitles for select performances.

If you don’t have time for a show or simply want to discover more about the theater itself, sign up for a 1-hour guided tour. Enjoy the chance to see the backstage and the wardrobe, which is packed with elaborate costumes, masks and props.

In 2009 the theater launched the Ingmar Bergman International Theater Festival. It allows both Swedish and international directors to showcase their works. Check the theater’s official website to find out when the next festival takes place.

You’ll find the theater located on Strandvägen waterfront promenade, in the affluent Östermalm neighborhood. Arrive by taking the metro to Östermalmstorg station or a bus or tram to Nybroplan transit stop. Östermalm has a varied selection of drinking and dining options perfect for pre- and post-show entertainment.

Shows take place year round at the Royal Dramatic Theater. Purchase tickets online via the official website or from Tuesday to Sunday at the box office. Check the website for information on guided tours.
