Experience the volcanic beauty and consistent good weather of Lanzarote without the tourist development in this pretty northern village.

The village of Punta Mujeres is far more relaxed than many other Lanzarote destinations, welcoming an array of independent travelers to its charming coastal streets. Tourism development has been slower here, making it feel authentic and welcoming. Embrace a gentler pace of life in this tranquil village, while still enjoying the numerous charms of the whole island.

Stroll around the picturesque village center to soak up the laid-back atmosphere. Several buildings here are made out of volcanic rock and appear to almost blend into the landscape. Fishing boats bob in the harbor, which can be easily traversed on foot.

Learn about the importance of a local plant in the Aloe Vera Interpretation Center. The fascinating museum in the village center educates visitors on the history, cultivation and uses of the plant, which is used extensively in skincare. The museum is free to enter.

Head to the ocean to enjoy tidal swimming pools. The water here can be too rough for swimming, but the tidal pools are sheltered from the rest of the ocean and are a popular place to cool off. Swim here at high tide to experience waves crashing over the rocks or visit at low tide when they turn into shallow rock pools.

In the evening, feast on seafood with ocean views or facing the peak of Monte Corona. One restaurant features an indoor fish pond, while others pride themselves on fresh catches and peaceful outdoor seating. Bars by the tidal pools become popular places to hang out at dusk, when locals emerge to enjoy the cooler weather.

Drive for about 30 minutes from Lanzarote Airport to reach Punta Mujeres in the northeast of the island. The resort town fills up quickly in the summer months, so visit in the shoulder seasons of spring and fall to still enjoy sunny days by the ocean. Come to the town in February and March to join in the carnival fiestas that take place throughout Lent at different destinations across the island.

"Buffet food was very good and using high quality ingredients. We loved the pools although something should be done about people reserving their spots, as after breakfast it was impossible to find a spot in the shade. A bit disappointed with the public toilets near the pool where there were no locks, ..."
