Swim among colorful fish and coral at Hermosa Bay Beach, a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) stretch of dark volcanic sand bordered by tide pools and mountains. Explore the coastline on a boat tour and discover a serene region that is becoming increasingly popular among vacationers. Hermosa is the Spanish word for “beautiful,” which aptly describes the beach, the clear ocean water and the green hills.
The beach is a little less crowded than the likes of Coco Beach and other destinations on the west coast. Take a blanket and some snacks to the beach and set up an idyllic picnic, complete with the soothing sound of the waves. Capture photos of the scenic landscape, including the rocky cliffs at both ends of the beach.
Go scuba diving or snorkeling with one of the tour centers located along the beach or in the town. Surfing is popular in this bay when big-barreled waves roll in from the North Pacific Ocean.
Admire the remarkable hilltop condos that overlook the beach. The real estate boom around Hermosa Bay Beach is one of the most prominent in all of Costa Rica. Large hotels and resorts contribute to the lively vibe around the northern end of the beach. The south of the beach is more tranquil due to fewer crowds and buildings.
Head inland to discover the bars and restaurants of the town. For more nightlife, take a cab to the downtown area of nearby Coco Beach. Enjoy a drink and chat with locals and other travelers.
Hermosa Bay Beach is just north of the popular oceanfront towns of Coco Beach and Ocotal Beach. The tropical forests and volcano of Santa Rosa National Park are 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) further up the coast. Take a 30-minute taxi ride from Liberia International Airport, located inland, to reach Hermosa Bay Beach.
