Playa del Carmen hotel rooms a the Highgate Independent

"Rooms are big, clean and nice. Staff is HORRID! My check experience was absolutely terrible. The lady checked me in was rude and barely knew any English. She had me waiting for good 20 min to finish counting her cash register. Her priorities are all messed up. Didn’t even acknowledge my arrival with an eye contact. Totally horrible. I barely understood what she said and just wanted to get away from her asap. Buffet staff are hit or miss. My last day breakfast @7 am on Friday March 27th, the host rolled her eyes cause I asked her to sit me closer to buffet due to discomfort. Place was empty anyway. When I asked her why would u do such a thing, she lied about something getting into her eye. Entertainment team tries hard but no experience at all. Bunch of kids spending more time socializing with each other rather than the guests. Food was mediocre at best. The smoothie bar at breakfast was great. Not a lot of healthy protein options. I don’t drink so I can’t judge on alcohol. Night shows are not bad. Some are good actually i.e fire show. Room service don’t pick up after midnight even though menu says otherwise. Most first are Canadian and are super nice. Beach is nonexistent. Small and full with seaweed. Smell is bad. Would I go back? Had the staff been nicer, I probably would consider. But as is, absolutely not. That rolled eye experience on my last day was horrendous. "

"Everything was great at the hotel! And I will definitely recommend it to family and friends…The only improvement I would suggest is having more vegetarian options in restaurants like Yashima and Il Portico. They had very limited options and were not open to creating dishes to meet our needs which could have been done fairly easily. In contrast, Sr. Esteban and Chef Jorge at Don Rafael really went out of their way to accommodate our needs with a smile! Special thanks to them. "

"We had a great stay and would come again. The only problem we had was the restaurants. Reservations were very difficult to get at all the resaurants and the quality of the food at most of them was poor. We ended up eating at the buffet more than we expected. The hotel and the staff were great."

"Clean room, staff was amazing, they upgraded my room to a master suite after an issue was discovered in my previous room. Breakfast was superb 👌🔥 would highly recommend and I’m definitely looking forward to going again "

"Staff if friendly, and the room was clean. The $70 fee upon arrival is something they should let be known when booking. The rooftop is nice with a good view. "
