Piazza San Domenico Maggiore

Piazza San Domenico Maggiore showing a square or plaza, religious aspects and a statue or sculpture
You'll feel like royalty sipping on your latte in this spectacular square surrounded by three palaces and an ornately decorated Gothic church.

The Piazza San Domenico Maggiore is close to the heart of Naples in more ways than one. The square is a constantly moving hive of activity, popular with both locals and tourists who gather here to take in the regal and reverent atmosphere while relaxing with an Italian-style coffee or a traditional pastry.

The piazza inherited its name from the San Domenico Maggiore church, whose imposing polygonal apse is the focal point of this lively square. Founded by the friars of the Dominican Order, the church was completed in 1324 and still contains the remains of a smaller church. San Michele Arcangelo a Morfisa originally stood in its place, and dates back to the 10th century. The church has undergone extensive modifications over the years, the most radical of these in 1670 when the structure was recast in the Baroque style, which was popular at the time however its original Gothic style was restored in the 19th century. Admire the building’s interior, a cross between Baroque and 19th-century neo-Gothic features, and gaze at some fine 14th-century frescoes by Pietro Cavallini and Renaissance monumental tombs.

Taking centre stage in the square is the remarkable Guglia di San Domenico, an intricately carved marble column erected between 1658 and 1737 and dedicated to San Domenico di Guzman in gratitude for the end of that century's plague. A statue of this saint, who was the founder of the Dominican Order, takes pride of place on top of this commanding structure.

A regal atmosphere wafts through the air in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, reminiscent of the Neapolitan nobility that once dwelled here. The square is enveloped by three palaces: Palazzo Casacalenda, Palazzo Petrucci and Palazzo Corigliano. If you fancy dining like a king or queen, make your way to Palazzo Petrucci, which now houses a renowned restaurant.

The remarkable sights and attractions aside, it’s the hustle and bustle of townspeople, market vendors and visitors that gives life to this vibrant square. Spend the day perusing the vintage boutiques or take a breather and enjoy a slice of delicious Neapolitan pizza as you watch the world go by.

The Piazza San Domenico Maggiore is situated near the centre of Naples and is open every day, all year round.
