Be amazed by the grandeur and opulence of this palace complex, a shining example of the lavish taste of the Russian czars.

The grounds of the Peterhof Palace and Garden are home to numerous palaces, fountains and fireworks displays. Dubbed “the Russian Versailles,” it contains all sorts of luxurious trappings. Explore the grounds for unique insight into how the Russian monarchy once lived.

Peter the Great wanted to emulate France’s famously decadent Palace of Versailles at Peterhof, and as visitors will attest, he certainly succeeded. Huge amounts of money were poured into the creation of the properties and grounds.

Begin at the Grand Palace, one of Peterhof’s main attractions. Designed by Baroque architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, its stately yellow and white façade is actually eclipsed by its interior. Entirely redone after carnage of World War II, the indoor areas of the Grand Palace are simply astonishing. Huge elaborate paintings plaster the walls and it is hard to find a room that has remained ungilded. Be sure to see the exuberant Throne Room and the Sofa Room, where the royals once relaxed, surrounded by delicately patterned furniture and wallpaper.

Among the other palaces on the grounds is Peter’s favorite, the comparatively humble Monplaisir Palace, a low, red building that is nevertheless very photogenic. Elsewhere on the grounds, you’ll find the pavilion called Peterhof Hermitage. Although it may seem miniature when compared with the Grand Palace, it comes complete with its own lavish dining room where small but indulgent parties were held.

Peterhof’s fountains are a tourist attraction in themselves. The opening ceremony in May sees them launch into action and there is a day-long festival featuring music and pyrotechnics.

Take a walk through the grounds, which deserve to be admired in their own right. Despite the chilly weather conditions in this part of the world, the garden is filled with vibrant greenery to explore and admire. Walk through the leafy trellis of the Upper Garden or tour the immaculate white sculptures that pepper the Lower Garden.

The Peterhof Palace and Garden are located 18.5 miles (30 kilometers) outside of the city. Take the train, bus or more scenic hydrofoil boat from St. Petersburg to reach the site, which has different entry fees depending on what you see and do.
