Perth

Growing from a humble military settlement characterized by its diverse mix of migrants, this town is today a popular historic site.

Perth was founded in southern Ontario as a military settlement in the first half of the 19th century. Today, it is a fascinating historic destination with a charming downtown center and a thriving local community. Visit Perth to explore its picturesque streets lined by quaint Victorian homes and grand monuments. Experience a weekend farmers market, attend a concert by the Perth Citizens Band in one of the oldest active bandstands in the country and see the fascinating architecture of the Crystal Palace.

Perth is built around the Tay River. Find much of the town on an island in the middle of the river. Visit the island to see the Perth Town Hall, one of the city’s major attractions. The historic site has been the center of activity for more than 150 years. Its Georgian clock tower is visible from across town.

Walk to the nearby Perth Museum to discover documents and artifacts that outline the city’s rich history. Learn about the influence European military veterans had on the foundation of the settlement and the waves of migrants that came in the years following.

Explore Perth’s center on foot to find shopping, dining and other historic sites. The picturesque town features streets lined by boutique retailers selling local produce, craft items and independent fashion pieces.

On Saturday, the community converges on the weekly farmers market. Join locals for the lively atmosphere while you pick up fresh produce. Pack a picnic and head into the idyllic countryside surrounding the town. Find a spot by the Tay River as it snakes across the landscape. Return to the town center to enjoy a performance in the bandstand behind the Town Hall.

Perth is located in southern Ontario, one hour by car from Canada’s capital, Ottawa. It can be reached by bus or car. Once you’re in town you’ll find hotels and motels in the surrounding area.
