I didn't stay but my boss did and he really enjoyed his stay that much he spent a extra night there and he's planning on taking his kids down there for a week or two some time in the future.

Nightmare Hotel

The photographs on the hotel . Com web site must be old. The hotel has completely run down, as soon as you walk into reception you can smell damp. Carpets throughout the hotel are well worn and stained /dirty.. The carpet in our room was frayed under the door and I tripped and caught my foot when entering the room. The bathroom tiles were chipped and they had holes where other bathroom things had been on the wall the shower curtain kept falling down it was only held up with the wrong sized screw. Paint flaking off the pipes under the bathroom wash basin. The toilet roll holder was high like something you would find in a gents urinal in a factory. Toilet roll was horrible. Bath was chipped. Shower had no water pressure it either was too hot or too cold. No wardrobe space. Door on the balcony wouldn’t lock properly. The ivy on the outside of the hotel was overgrown and covering the windows in the restaurant so much that it was growing on the inside coming through the window pains. The indoor swimming was out of order didn’t look like photo, outdoor pool was filthy, the bowling games room was disgusting completely run down used as a storage area Not in use. The toaster wasn’t working properly so there was a queue and when you ordered for example a poached egg by the time you got toast your egg was cold???? The staff were very friendly and helpful. The views from the room was really good. Would recommend a complete refurb or knocking the hotel down good location.

Comfortable room and a lovely view of the Gannel from the terrace. The breakfast was good and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Shabby but amazing service

The hotel is run down but you get what you pay for. We had room 10 the view is lovely. The staff are amazing and the evening meal food quality was fantastic. The bowling and pool are closed. Bowling due to staffing and pool due to chlorine levels. Access to the river is just to the left of the hotel and the bus to Newquay leaves from outside the hotel. Over all having paid only £135 for 2 night with breakfast we have nothing to complain about. It is what it is but location and service is fantastic.

Quite disappointing overall for the price paid. The hotel seems to be a shadow of what it might have been in the past: swimming pool closed, no sun umbrellas outside, no exterior bar, nothing to eat on a Tuesday ( it seems the restaurant opens only a few days per week - not mentioned when we booked, just like the swimming pool), the breakfast seemed half portion, the buffet was open ( even with Covid) and just with toasts, fruit and jams, not even croissants. Clearly the business struggled during the pandemic or something but the price should reflect that. It was extremely warm outside, we left the beach to go have some lunch and stay by the pool but when we got there nothing was available. No air conditioning not even a fan, in the bath the shower curtains were not cleaned properly. The staff was not too professional overall. Clearly a good place that needs a new management team. Fortunately we only stayed one night.

It was ‘ok’.

If you don’t expect too much, you won’t be disappointed. A lot could be done to improve the aesthetics, but we have no complaints about the cleanliness. We stayed for 7 nights and every morning, the breakfast experience was unorganised. The wait staff were friendly and helpful, but spent most of their time apologising for the wrong order or not taking the order at all or simply wandering around the dining room with plates of food not knowing where they were destined for, in fact, we named the dining room the ‘sorry about that’ room. More training and support needed for these guys and they’d be great. The biggest negative for us was the noise at night, when it rained the running water hitting the flat roof was very noisy, maybe guttering could be checked, and creaky floorboards and stairs when people pass our room, but overall our stay was good.

Having stayed twice before, I do like coming back to Hotel California- the location is incredible, the staff lovely, the facilities great (esp in the time of COVID) and restaurant brilliant. Unfortunately this time, we had to check out early as our room was so disappointing. It was very bare when we arrived and was directly under the bar so we could hear the groups above. There were leak stains on the ceiling and the shower was either freezing or boiling hot. The bed slates continuously slipped while sleeping and the mattress more just a piece of foam. It broke my back and I had to sleep on the floor. The hotel couldn’t provide another room or even a n extra blanket/duvet so I had to sleep under a coat on the floor for 3 nights. We left 3 days early of our week long stay as for nearly £1000 the room was not up to standard. Not much was said when we checked out and explained why we were leaving.

Stay at your own Expectation vs Reality situation

If you are a first timer to this hotel I opt you not. I do not have a good reason to return to this hotel for the 2nd time. The balcony with seaview was of swimming pool. Bed mattress was buldge in the middle & downhill on the sides my husband slept in the bunk bed which I didn't know came in our booking, I had only booked for standard double bed room with sea-view balcony. We tried to talk to the receptionist but she had excuses to everything we had to say. Service in the restaurant wasn't that friendly either. The waitress would greet everyone but us. We could see the difference on how we were treated, maybe we looked young? or maybe we weren't English looking? Cleanliness of the room was so so. Most things does look dated. Cracks on the bathtub & door. I didn't even wanna go out to the balcony because of how tired it looked same with the chairs outside & inside. If you do go to this place, take your toothbrushs, shampoo, sliders with you. The rooms also don't have a mini fridge.

Five star food

The staff, the food and location are excellent. Food was fantastic, five star meals!! Staff are super friendly and helpful. Hotel was set up for covid very well and it made for a very pleasant stay. The location of the hotel on the river with views of the sea are amazing. The only downside was the room and furniture are a bit dated and old, the stuffing in the chair had gone. But overall an enjoyable stay
