This landmark complex on the harbour has put its postmodernist stamp firmly on Dusseldorfâs skyline.
Der Neue Zollhof, or new customs house, replaced the former building at the port of Dusseldorf between 1996 and 1998. The complex of three buildings is the work of the celebrated Canadian architect Frank Gehry, famous for his ground-breaking Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and Los Angelesâ striking Walt Disney Concert Hall. Gehryâs trademark playfulness can be seen in these eye-catching constructions.
The three towers interconnect and lean up against each other in a dizzy postmodern take on conventional perspective. Each building is clad in a different material, with the outer two of white plaster and red brick reflecting in the stainless steel of the central tower. The tallest tower is just under 50 metres tall. Despite their size, the graceful slopes and curves lend them a curious elegance.
Der Neue Zollhof is at the heart of the redeveloped harbour, Medienhafen, a magnet for lovers of cutting-edge architecture. Take a walk along the waterfront to see the glass-fronted Capricorn House with its state-of-the-art temperature control panels, then ride to the observation deck at the top of the space-age Rhine Tower for fabulous views across the city.

Der Neue Zollhof is around ten minutesâ drive from Dusseldorf old town. There is pay parking nearby and plenty of public transport connections. On foot it is a pleasant 30-minute walk from the city centre, with various places of interest to admire along the way.
