National Museum of Natural Science

National Museum of Natural Science showing a statue or sculpture and a garden
From the creation of planets and the dinosaur age to the workings of the human body and modern discoveries, this multi-venue complex explores the wonders of science.

Walk through a dinosaur gallery, explore a tropical rainforest environment and investigate the subatomic world at the National Museum of Natural Science. This multi-building campus is spread across 22 acres (8.9 hectares) and explores science and nature through ancient artifacts, hands-on exhibits, robotics and dioramas.

Head to the Life Sciences Hall and discover how life started on our planet. Examine fossils and get close to animatronic models of dinosaurs. Look at photographs, models and interactive exhibits that explore the evolution of birds and the mechanics of flight. Here you can also visit exhibits that follow the journey the human body takes from birth to death.

Inside the Human Cultures Hall, observe sculptures, textiles, masks, paintings and ceramics as you learn about thousands of years of Oceania’s history. Study ancient Chinese records written on turtle shells and early pieces of scientific apparatus. See a recreation of a traditional Chinese pharmacy and view more than 100 different species of medicinal herbs in the herb garden.

You can check out more plant life in the museum’s 11.1-acre (4.5-hectare) Botanical Garden, which is home to more than 800 plant species. Stroll by streams and ponds and through a tropical rainforest conservatory. Go to the Global Environment Hall for the museum’s extensive mineral and gem collection.

Take the kids to the Children’s Discovery Room in the Science Center. The interactive exhibits are designed for young children and provide an introduction to the natural world. There's lots for older children and adults to explore elsewhere in the center, which focuses on modern science and discoveries. Pick up insights into the creation of planets and try hands-on activities related to physical and chemical phenomena.

Situated in downtown Taichung, the museum is a short bus ride away from Taichung railway station. For drivers, there is metered parking in the museum’s underground parking lot.

The National Museum of Natural Science is open every day except Mondays. There is no admission fee to enter the museum’s grounds, but the different venues attract separate charges.
