Nan Wan Beach

A beach with colorful umbrellas and chairs, a tractor, and the ocean in the background.
A street lined with shops, a 7-Eleven, and a 7 Eleven sign.
A beach with people surfing and a line of boats in the background.
A beach with people, boats, and buildings.
A body of water with several jet skis and a wakeboard.

This former Japanese whaling site gradually became a quaint fishing village and now a popular beach area with water activities.

Nan Wan Beach is a scenic stretch of sand on the island’s south coast, where travelers and locals enjoy swimming and snorkeling. Amble at your leisure along the soft, white sand with a view of the Pacific Ocean. At nearly 2,000 feet (600 meters) in length, it is the longest beach in Kenting National Park, a vast area of diverse terrain that includes tropical forests, sprawling meadows and a historical armed lighthouse.

This beach is renowned for its array of thrilling activities in the water. It is one of the few beaches in the national park that is suitable for swimming due to its lack of sharp rocks or fast tides. Go scuba diving or snorkeling in the ocean with a tour operator near the beach to see the range of colorful fish. The beach has plenty of banana boats and Jet Skis that you can rent for a thrilling ride.

Sunbathe on the sand before cooling off in the water with a relaxing swim. Share a picnic with your family on the beach with a picturesque view of the ocean and the nearby green cliffs.

There are showers, bathroom facilities and restaurants in the Nan Wan Recreation Area. Visit the beach between April and July for the milkfish season and watch hoards of locals fishing with old-fashioned tools in the ocean.

Travelers also know the beach as South Bay, in reference to its geographical location, and sometimes as Blue Bay. During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan in the early 20th century, the bay was a whaling site.

Opposite the beach, find restaurants with colorful façades and small shops that offer diving opportunities.

Find Nan Wan Beach in Kenting National Park on Taiwan’s southern coastline. Drive a couple hours south from Pingtung City or take a bus, which may take a few hours longer, to reach the park. The journey incorporates 62 miles (100 kilometers) of scenic roads.
