Very strange feeling when we arrived. No clear entry point. Had to call to let staff know we were outside. Grounds were unkempt. Room was dark and seemed grungy. Good bathroom. We slept with the lights on for the first time. We were the only guests. Met the owner, very nice, and gave us a tour of the castle. Cannot recommend.
Absolutely loved this quirky castle. The owners was so friendly and welcoming. Very knowledgeable about the castles history and did a personal tour which I loved. His love for the property showed so much in this tour. Breakfast was delicious and left nothing to ask for. Would stay here again. No complaints.
We enjoyed our stay in this very old and rustic castle! Robbie was super friendly and very knowledgeable about all the history! We learned alot from him! Thank you for the tour! Loved the castle its self and the grounds. Location was fantastic! Minutes walk down to the beach!
Although it was a little tricky to find (ignore the sign that says “Hallgreen House” you want the Hallgreen Castle) we had a great experience. The owner is very kind and a great conversationalist. He made us dinner because we got in so late. Staying the castle was like staying in a museum and the owner showed us around and taught us about living castles. Strongly recommend.
Robbie is a genuine castle owner who shared his home with just us .. its a lived-in home .. it has the basics , no fancy mod cons but...dates back to 1380, breakfast was the best we had touring Scotland , he absolutely nailed it with such a large choice just for me and my girl 👍 the Tour was very interesting also....meters to walk down to the beach....hes eccentric , the place is said to be haunted, but we loved the Quirky place .. we will definitely be back .. .. the period wallpaper is matching the original .. loved it !! Robbies castle and our stay was awesome !!!
My wife and I loved it and we’re so looking forward to going back, we got a great welcome on arrival and were told about all the local facilities and sights, we love castles and this is the genuine article, maybe going to get back around Christmas time.
The owner Robbie was very nice, friendly and accommodating. We had the delux room which was amazing. Four poster bed, well decorated, en suite bathroom, shower and bath. TV and sofa area. Coffee and tea area. WiFi. Robbie left milk and water in fridge for us at no extra charge. Breakfast was extra, £10 per head, we only had this once. Absolutely delicious. Cereal and pastries as well as a full cooked Scottish breakfast. Would definitely stay here again. Very good value for money.
Robbie was a delightful host, cooks a terrific breakfast and gave a excellent architectural history tour of the building. Comfortable, well located for the whole coastal area sights, and the opportunity to stay in a truly historic place.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Disliked: Property conditions & facilities
Owned & run by a delightful man who is fascinated by castles & who gave us a tour over much of the place. The bedroom was spacious & freezing cold, but soon warmed up with heaters.
But - it was poorly equipped: no bedside tables, no bedside light on one side, & no hanging

Quirky, friendly, comfy& a little eccentric !
A very interesting place to stay. Quite hard to find as sat nav didn’t like the postcode. I’m a single traveler but this place is definitely not for the faint hearted. The owner was most welcoming & friendly & clearly very proud of his rambling castle. If you’re looking for quirky this is the place to stay. If your expecting mod cons, look elsewhere !
Extremely friendly owners are renovating a castle. Went out of their way to make our stay magnificent - along with preparing an authentic Scottish breakfast for us + company. Has gorgeous floral garden trail straight to the North Sea.
