An impressive medieval fortress overlooks this quaint town set amid rice fields in a valley with the Mondego River running through it.

Montemor-o-Velho is a quaint town in central Portugal with an iconic castle and picturesque terrain. It has one of the world’s few internationally sized 1.2-mile (2-kilometer) rowing lakes and has hosted several tournaments. Stroll through the charming alleys of the town and relax by the lake.

Gaze up at the imposing Montemor-o-Velho Castle, which overlooks the Mondego River and the town’s valley. The town has a history dating back to the Arabian settlers of the 8th century. Learn about the castle’s rich history, involving the Catholic Reconquista and Portugal’s independence.

Admire the acclaimed works of art lining the walls of the chapel. Speak with docents in the information center. Enjoy the scenic views of the Mondego rice fields from the Infantas Manor and Tea House, which has glass walls and an elegant terrace, generating a relaxing and picturesque setting.

Go to the town’s historic center for majestic manor houses and churches. Visit the Nautical Center of Montemor-o-Velho, where athletes can row, swim and take part in triathlons.

A little northeast is the charming village of Tentúgal, known for its exceptional cakes. Snap photos of Our Lady of Carmo Convent and other churches. Make your way to the village of Pereira to see the Granary of the Dukes of Aveiro and the Misericórdia Church.

Take advantage of the region’s long, hot summers, with a stroll along the charming lanes of the countryside. Note that winters are mild and relatively short, while December is the wettest month. The scenery comprises endless rice fields and green hills, which change color as the seasons progress.

Montemor-o-Velho is known for its wonderful castle, extensive history and verdant countryside. Find the town in the heart of the Coimbra district in the Centro region of Portugal. Arrive by air to Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport in Porto and drive south for 90 miles (150 kilometers) to get here in about 90 minutes. The historic city of Coimbra is just 19 miles (30 kilometers) east along the Mondego River.

This was a diamond in the rough. The staff was courteous, the room clean and well located. To be fair, Coimbra was not at its best due to the weather pummeling it in early Feb, 2026 but the welcome received at the Oslo was outstanding. The food was good and I felt at home for the time I spent ...

Excellent location and view, the air conditioning did not cool properly. The hotel looks old, and while we understand the intention is to be antique, there is a difference between old and truly antique.
