Montefortino is an Italian municipality in the Province of Fermo, in the region of Le Marche. Discover a picturesque town with traditional stone houses, narrow streets and historic buildings. At the beginning of the 11th century, Montefortino’s hilly landscape was dotted with fortresses and castles. Over the centuries, the main activities of the Montefortino area were processing wool and doing other agricultural work. The main entrance to the historic quarter of Montefortino is called Porta Santa Lucia. The ancient brick arch was built around the 14th century with a very small room on top, which was the residence of the gatekeeper. Near this beautiful gate, see the old church Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie, also called Madonna della Fonte Santa Maria delle Grazie. It was built in 1647 and has three chapels, an octagonal dome and Baroque decoration.
Walk up the hill of the historic center to see the oldest area of Montefortino. You’ll find the famous Chiesa di San Francesco, a fantastic church that was built using the materials of a fortress demolished in the 15th century.
While you are visiting Montefortino, make sure you see some of its great art masterpieces. The Pinacoteca Fortunato Duranti is a celebrated art collection displayed in the magnificent 16th-century Palazzo Leopardi. You’ll also find valuable artwork inside the many churches of the area, such as the canvas Madonna del Rosario, in the Church of San Francesco. In the museum Casa delle Colonne make sure to take photos of its renowned clock tower.
