In the twentieth century there were two Portuguese flag vessels with the designation of Gil Eannes and function of the hospital ship , both having provided support to the activities of fishing for cod in the waters of Newfoundland, the Grand Banks and in Greenland . Its function is justified since the Portuguese fishing vessels were routinely isolated in that water for several months .

The first ship to receive this name was Lahneck , a ship of the German Empire learned following the entry of Portugal in World War I (1916 ) , then transformed into auxiliary cruiser of the Portuguese Navy . Later , in 1927 sailed first to Newfoundland , having been adapted to a hospital ship in shipyards in the Netherlands .

In 1955 it was replaced by a new vessel , namesake , built from scratch in the Shipyard of Viana do Castelo . Throughout its existence , served as a ship - captaincy , ship - mail , ship - tug and icebreaker , ensuring the supply of groceries , nets , fishing equipment , fuel, water and bait for cod fishing boats .
