Follow in the regal footsteps of the emperors who delighted in the natural thermal water spas of this hub for relaxation.

Dōgo Onsen (Dōgo Hot Spring) is known for its soothing thermal waters, said to possess healing properties. A range of intriguing museums, shrines and other sights have developed around these hot springs, making it one of the most visited areas in the city. Pursue utter relaxation in the historic and elegant rooms of the spa.

The highlight of the zone is the Dōgo Onsen Honkan, a bath house whose traditional architecture is said to have inspired the classic Japanese film Spirited Away. Flit between the Bath of the Gods and the Bath of the Spirits, before checking out the opulent room once reserved for the imperial family. Enjoy traditional crackers in one of the private rooms.

A little south of the bath house is Dōgo Park, a large circular set of grounds with colorful flowers and cherry blossom trees that wrap around it in spring. Ascend to the viewing platform on a hill for an excellent panorama of the city. Inspect the park’s Yuzuki Castle Ruins and admire the replica of the samurai complex. The adjacent Yuzuki-jō Museum displays an array of artifacts illustrating lives of the Kōno rulers who inhabited the castle.

Get a sense of historic Japanese art and innovation at the Dogo Giyaman Glass Museum where you’ll find glass animals, cigars and other surprising subjects. Enjoy the tranquility in the café near the complex’s pond. The Botchan Karakuri Clock comes to life on the hour, displaying characters and scenes from a locally set novel.

For the spiritual side of the district, visit the Hōgon-ji Temple and the Isaniwa Shrine.

The Dōgo Onsen neighborhood is in the northeastern part of Matsuyama. Take the tram to the Dōgo Onsen Station at its eastern terminal and explore the area on foot. Visit some of the neighboring areas, such as Dogokitashiro, Dogoimaichi and Iwaidani.

Come to Dōgo Hot Spring for the thermal spas and stay for its museums and temples.
