Really great bar in this hotel with solid food and drink offerings. Hotel facilities could use an update but overall good experience and very comfortable bed. Shepherdstown is a great little town to visit!
I needed a room in Shepherdstown. This was the nicest hotel, but it is pretty worn. The rooms were clean and the staff was friendly, but the sheers were ripped to shreds. Yes, really completely ripped. Like there had been a cat in the room prior to our stay. I could not believe they'd put a customer in that room! Better to remove the sheers. The bathroom had seen far better days. The sink was terrible. It looked like someone had taken a hammer to it. Same with the electrical outlet; it was cracked in pieces and barely hanging to the wall. How much could that cost to replace? The bathtub grout could never get clean again. I didn't feel the place was dirty, and the painting in the room felt fresh, but the entire place felt dated and old.
The setting was nice and tucked away yet still very close to downtown. It was quiet despite a conference going on.
The breakfast was tasty and filling and very reasonable cost.
The room was well cleaned and stocked for an overnight stay, however, I do suggest management have routine touch ups done to cover markings what appears to be scrapes on the walls from possible guest luggage brushing against the paint leaving behind visible marks. The air conditioning was wonderful the room was well cool and comfortable and Ramsey's Tavern is the best margaritas freshly made and sizable!

Not particularly senior citizen friendly. 2 lamps in room 116 were not working. Safety bars in the bathroom would have been nice. The toilet is low enough to function as a potty chair.
The check in people -- two bored teenagers -- when we arrived at 7 pm on Saturday, after 90 miles of biking, were outstandingly unhelpful. It took them three tries to give us working keys that opened the door to a room that was not already occupied by other customers. Not a good start. The hotel though was nice. Well appointed and comfortable. The bar/tavern is good, handy, and manned, or wo-manned, by very professional people serving comfort food in a comfortable place.

A night’s stay
So, I wanted to give a good review, but if I am honest my stay was mediocre. The bed was okay but not fantastic. The carpeting in the room was bunched up. The air conditioner was extremely loud which somewhat defeated the idea of a “quiet room’ that I asked for. The bathroom was small, but the toilet worked well and the shower had good water pressure although the curtains were close to the tub so they kept bumping into you during the shower. The room wasn’t terrible and there is not many choices for lodging in Shepardstown, but for the rate we paid I expected a better room with better amenities. I felt that the hotel was not a good value. I would stay there again in the future, but for the price they charge they need to upgrade the amenities.
Stayed here because it was convenient to the University I was giving a talk at the next morning. The room was nice and clean as one would expect. But the bathroom was dated and the TV was still analog, no digital TV in my room anyway. You have to pay for breakfast here, so if you are in a hurry it would be cheaper and easier to grab something at the coffee shop in Shepherdstown. I did enjoy the quite location of the hotel and the front desk people were pleasant and helpful.
Very disappointed in the room. I had been going there on/off for several years and was shocked at the condition of the room. Maybe they are getting complacent thinking no one cares.... I won't stay there again - for the money there are places in Martinsburg that are much nicer and only 5-10 minuets further down the road. Here is what I sent the Management:
1. Walls were dirty - scars and marks from luggage and other unknown substances.
2. Room door handle was loose and hanging down - every other door handle on the floor was upright - should have been and easy fix and pretty obvious it needed repair.
3. Left closet door handle was almost off - once again - very obvious and should have been an easy repair.
4. Bathroom sink very cracked.
5. Bathtub faucet stuck out from the wall almost a quarter of an inch - why? Obviously not installed correctly.
Nice bar and restaurant inside with a upscale feel.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Comfortable with pleasant staffing, what disappointed me with my experience here was the set of curtains on our first-floor window, which were torn into shreds. I told the front desk about it, nothing changed. Grant this was Thanksgiving weekend and maintenance staff might have been short. Also, breakfast is not worth the price, including the coffee, which does not include refills. The lobby offered complimentary coffee only one of our two mornings there.
The location is great to spend time touring the history of Sheperdstown and Hapers Ferry. The hotel restaurant was highly rated so we decided to stay there for dinner. We arrived at little after 5:00 pm and were one of the first to arrive for dinner. Our waitress exhibited the behaviors of being under the influence, slurred speech, confusion and slow functioning. We waited for over 2 hours and only received one drink and a basket of rolls. When we ask to see the manager, the bartender was the manger and helped get our food prepared from the kitchen and brought it to the table. Another waiter there also helped. The food was very good but we did not get to leave the restaurant until over 3 and a half hours later. We were offered no discount on the bill. The shower was broken in our room the next morning. No water would come out of the faucet nor the shower when turned on. The girl at the desk said maintenance was not in yet and the only option was to move us to another room but she did not have one available at that time. We managed without a shower and when we returned late afternoon, the shower was repaired. Duck tape was used across the floor in front of the bathroom door to keep the separation from the carpet to the tile from being a hazard. There was no manager available when we checked out the next morning. We were offered a comment card to complete. No discount nor any incentive was offered. I will not return there on my next trip nor can I refer family and friends.
Needs some updating. Carpet warn and stained lighting is too dim. The breakfast was around $10 per person and equivalent to the free breakfast at most hotels.
Nice hotel close to AT when we needed to pick family up from their AT walk.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service, room comfort
Comfortable, clean room. The only downer was that the restaurant was under renovation. Pub fare was very good.
We were pleasantly surprised. Too bad it is so far off the interstate (about 20 minutes), but it is set in a nice community with plenty of restaurants of with varied menus in the area.
