A lively city known for its spicy food, Manado is surrounded by superb mountain treks, relaxing hot springs and some of Indonesia’s finest diving.

Come to Manado and explore the stunning national parks and nature reserves, challenge your taste buds with some of Indonesia’s spiciest food and explore the bustling markets and nightspots in the town centre.

Manado is the capital of the North Sulawesi area and the perfect place to base yourself to explore the region’s many natural treasures. The city is remote so the best way to get here is by plane. Once here though, you’ll find a number of guides available to take you on day trips to the hot springs, mountains, coral reefs and more that surround the city.

The most popular reef is Bunaken Marine Park. Dive or snorkel in the warm, crystal clear waters and encounter sea turtles, rays and any number of exotic and colourful fish. You can come here on a daytrip or stay in the small wooden beach huts. Regular ferries from Manado harbour will take you here.

See the world’s smallest monkeys, the tarsiers, when you visit the Tangkoko Nature Reserve. This is located 50 kilometres (30 miles) from Manado and features three separate mountain peaks for hikers to choose from. You can also enjoy stunning views from the Bukit Kasih Hot Springs where the warm waters will revive your aching feet.

Take a day or two’s break between trekking and diving and explore the sights within Manado itself. Ban Hin Kiong is an old Chinese temple with several shrines and statues. Head to the harbour and shop for fresh produce in the Pasar Bersehati Market.

With so many of Manado’s attractions being outdoors it is essential to think about the weather when planning your trip. November to February tend to be the wetter months, with May to August offering the clearest waters for diving and the best views from the mountain tops.
