Limousin

Travel Guide

A street with buildings, a cafe, and a red car.
A narrow street with historic buildings, a church spire, and a shoe store.
A modern building with a glass facade, a tree in front, and a colorful mosaic wall.
A museum interior with glass display cases containing various ceramic vases and plates.
A stone bridge over a calm river, surrounded by lush greenery and buildings.

At the crossroads of France and the gateway to the South-West, Limousin will seduce you with its culture, architecture, nature, history and gastronomy.

An agricultural, rural and artisan region, Limousin offers a rich range of activities for a weekend or an extended holiday in one of its three departments – Creuse, Corrèze and Haute-Vienne – where nature has been protected and towns and villages have a strong personality.

Known throughout the entire world for its Limoges porcelain, Limousin combines culture, architecture and heritage with its castles (Boussac, Pompadour), its Romanesque churches (Aubazine, Solignac) on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, and its contemporary museums (Porcelain and Fine Arts in Limoges, Centre de la Mémoire in Oradour-sur-Glane). A source of creativity, the region has always been witness the history of the people who live there.

Discover the picturesque alleys of small villages known as “the most beautiful villages of France”, such as Collonges-la-Rouge, Mortemart, Turenne, Ségur-le-Château. Take in the local markets, visit craft shops or taste the many specialities such as clafoutis, creusois, farcidure, galetou, madeleine and mica.

Do you love nature? Explore the gardens of the magnificent Limousin mansions, along the many paths during unforgettable hikes and observe the fauna and flora (Reynou Park, Limousin aquarium). If you are a lover of wilderness, the region offers two natural parks: Millevaches and Périgord-Limousin. You can also hike to the highest point of the region, Mount Bessou, or in the valleys of the Dordogne, Creuse, Vienne and Vézère, as well as in the Causse Corrézien and the Plateau of Millevaches. Nicknamed “the water tower” because of its innumerable lakes and rivers, discover Limousin’s sublime landscapes or take part in water sports at locations such as Lake Vassivière.

You can reach Limousin by car, train or plane (airports in Brive-la-Gaillarde and Limoges are accessible from UK airports). A practical way to discover the region.
