Here you can visit an original unearthed viking ship which used to contain a Viking Warrior and his horses and several dogs as sacrificed gifts to the gods. Pilfered years ago very little of the remains are still in tact and are barely visible. Local craftsman are also creating a replica of the ship using ancient methods and you can watch their progress closely.

Travelling to Kerteminde means miles of coastline, nature and everything that fishing enthusiasts could wish for. It’s no coincidence that the town is called “Haven ved Havet” (the Garden by the Sea).

Kerteminde town is almost an attraction in itself. If you walk through the tiny streets, you can almost touch the multi-coloured houses on both sides of the street at the same time. You will experience the true feel of the fishing town of Kerteminde since its beginnings as Odense’s harbour town, and where recreational fishing is still the main reason why many people travel to Kerteminde.

The Funen market town on the Storebælt (Great Belt) is probably the most important and largest fishing harbour on the island. Kerteminde has countless fishing spots for sea enthusiasts, so cast your line in the sea and feel the tug when you catch a sea trout! For people who like sailing, the sailing clubs in Kerteminde Marina organise everything from dinghy rallies to distance regattas. The marina was founded in the 1970s and is one of Denmark’s largest.

Nature lovers should visit Fyns Hoved (Funen’s Head), which is one of Denmark’s most beautiful locations. It is the area in Denmark that gets the least amount of rain, and a high amount of sunshine which means that unique plants thrive here. The special rainfall patterns give the area an unusual light which has attracted many painters through the years. End your walk on Fynshoved Strand (Funen’s Head Beach), and become one with nature!

Hold a crab, tickle a starfish and watch a group of playful seals. At Fjord&Bælt (Fjord&Belt), you’re free to see with your fingers and get close to life under the surface. The centre, which opened in 1997, functions both as a tourist attraction and a research institution, and aims to raise awareness about life in the inner Danish waters through research and activities.

If you take a trip in Kerteminde in July, you can join in the cherry celebrations! Under the slogan “Se, lyt og smag” (“Look, listen and taste”), the town opens up its doors to the Kirsebærfestival i Kerteminde (Cherry Festival in Kerteminde), a weekend filled with activities for the whole family. The festival is a tribute to the traditions of cherry cultivation in northeast Funen.

Kerteminde is located about a 2-hour drive from both Copenhagen and Aarhus, although the easiest way to reach the town is via Hans Christian Andersen Airport from Edinburgh just outside Odense, which is about 30 minutes away by car. You can also take bus 151 from the centre of Odense to reach the town. Kerteminde is especially popular in the summer, when people flock there to enjoy the popular beaches and the Great Belt’s seawaters.

Visit Kerteminde, and get that old-fashioned fishing feeling, experience its unique nature and the opportunity to eat all the cherries you want!
