"The property is lovely. Perched on the hillside, you feel like you’re on top of the world every day at breakfast with panoramic view of Lake Kivu. Our cabin was the closest to the lake which offered us unobstructed views from our patio which was the perfect spot to read or watch an incoming rain storm. It was a bit more of a hike uphill to breakfast and dinner but it was worth it. Plus we were also closer to the pool which was really one of the deciding factors why we picked Umutozo. You also have to take an outdoor shower while you’re there! Food was tasty and very fresh, we said hi to the on-site animals a couple of times. We enjoyed chatting with other guests and the owner Philippe at meal times. The staff was also great including Olivier who took us on our excursion to Napoleon Island and was very engaging to talk to on the boat ride there. I do recommend having a 4wd vehicle since there is a substantial amount of driving on unpaved roads required to reach the property. Very much enjoyed our time spent here."

What makes the stay even more special is the hospitality of the staff. They are genuinely kind, professional, and always available to assist with a smile. Add to that the tasty breakfast and fresh meals, and every day starts on a perfect note. This place is not just an apartment—it’s a retreat where you can relax in peace after exploring the city. In my opinion, Safe Haven Apartments sets a new standard for quality and comfort in Africa. "This hotel is the best place to stay in Kinigi/to gorilla trek! It’s the closest lodge to the Dian Fossey campus and women’s village, and the staff is exceptional. They are very friendly and helpful and went above and beyond. We loved that we’d come back to the hotel and they’d clean our shoes and give us a foot massage. They’d also get a fire going in your room while you are having dinner. We’d come back to bed with a heated bed (thanks to a warm water bottle they place in there) and a fire going. We felt we were in the coziest hotel room ever. The food was great too with an ever changing menu. I’d recommend getting the full board. It’d be hard to try restaurants at different lodges, so you’d save money instead of buying the meals separate. Last but not least, the super sweet dog Sparky. He added so much charm and welcomed all guests. We loved having him around so much. "
