As the northern gateway to the Catlins region, Kaka Point is a great stopover on the Southern Scenic Route, the popular driving tour of New Zealand’s South Island. A picturesque camping ground surrounded by dense native shrubs is just a short walk from Roaring Bay, one of the Catlins’ most popular swimming beaches. Swim in the refreshing southern water in summer under the gaze of trained lifeguards or bring your surfboard to challenge the waves. Nearby Cannibal Bay Beach has two great surf breaks that suit surfers of all levels, as well as a resident colony of sea lions.
Follow the coast south to reach Nugget Point and the historic Nugget Point Lighthouse. Perched high above the rugged coastline, the lighthouse has been a fixture of the Catlins since the 1870s.
The main street of Kaka Point offers a general store, a restaurant and some accommodation choices. Sit down for a glass of locally produced wine and try the catch of the day as you relax after your explorations.
Kaka Point is located 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Dunedin, about a 1-hour drive. Buses service the area however, renting a car gives you the freedom to explore the Catlins at your own pace. Bring warm clothes in winter, as temperatures drop quite low.
