Sparks the imagination. Museum part closed on Mon & Tues, but free to wander and imagine what life was like here at this working gold mine.
Independence Mine in Hatcher Pass, Alaska in May is a beautiful and quiet place with plenty of snow left on the ground due to its place in the mountains. Be prepared to park a bit away and hike up to the mine since the gate is closed. The road after the gate is not plowed so winter boots are a must.

Independence Mine was a gold mine up until the 1950s at which point it closed up. The buildings, in varying states of integrity, still stand and is open for self guided tours year-round.
