Travel Guide
Hirtshals
Travelling to Hirtshals means getting truly close to the sea and its importance for the town, and also getting the chance to see exciting wildlife, both above and below the water.

Have a holiday or a weekend getaway in Hirtshals if you’re interested in the North Sea and the many opportunities it offers. The sea is at the centre of many activities and you can have a lot of amazing experiences when you travel to Hirtshals. The nature and wildlife in the area make it an exciting holiday destination with lots to explore.

Hirtshals is a fishing town located at the top of Denmark on the coast of the North Sea, which means that the sea is at the very heart of the town. Hirtshals Havn (Hirtshals Harbour) is therefore a must during your trip, as you will get to see the boats coming in filled with fish and various other fishing-related activities. At the harbour, you will also be able to see the Trappe og Monument (Stairs and Monument) structure which was built to connect the town with the harbour, but also makes for a fun attraction and a great lookout point.

Continue exploring the sea with a visit to the Nordsøen Oceanarium (North Sea Oceanarium), the largest aquarium in Northern Europe. You will get to see seals as well as about 70 different species of fish including sharks, and there are many activities you can also participate in. You can catch crabs, crawl around in a shipwreck and watch as the animals are fed.

If you’d like to see more animals, take a trip to the Fun-park Hirtshals, where there is something to do for the whole family. There are approximately 70 different species, some more exotic than others, and you can get up close to some of them. Take a pony ride, pet a goat and help feed the animals. There are enough activities to fill the whole day!

If you go to the beach by the North Sea, don’t miss Denmark’s only complete and excavated German bunker, which is open to visitors. At the Bunkermuseet Hirtshals (Hirtshals Bunker Museum), you will find 54 excavated bunkers connected by pathways, as well as exhibitions of various weapons.

To reach Hirsthals, firstly, catch a flight to Aalborg Airport, operating flights to and from London. You can then rent a car or take a taxi to travel to Hirsthals, with a journey time of approximately 40 minutes. You can also take the ICL train line from the city of Aalborg to reach Hjørring St. to the south, then take bus 76, with a total journey time of about 1 hour 20 minutes.

Visit Hirtshals in northern Denmark, and take wonderful memories home with you. Both young and old can enjoy the many opportunities that nature offers, and you will get a unique insight into the area and Denmark’s history.
