Namibia

This is a picture I took on my first and only so far hot air balloon ride. It was in Namibia looking over Sossusvlei dunes. They are some of the oldest dunes in the world and how they measure their age is partially dune by the color. The sand here has a tiny amount of iron in it and with a lot of age eventually rusts and that is what that orange color is. This trip was with Namib Sky Balloon Safaris and they had a wonderful trip followed by breakfast by the dunes. Today is the 2 month anniversary of my fathers death and the sadness is nearly overwhelming me, I am trying to fight it off with pictures from past adventures which act as my patronus and remind me of all the beauty and wonder in the world.

This is a picture of a giant birds nest up in a tree in Namibia, they are massive nests made by tiny sparrow sized birds.
They are called sociable weavers "Social weaver, any of a number of small African birds of the family Ploceidae (order Passeriformes) that are extremely gregarious. This name is given particularly to Philetairus socius, which makes an “apartment house” in a tree: dozens of pairs of these little black-chinned birds cooperate year-round to maintain a thatchlike roof over the colony, which may contain 300 chambers (one per pair); the roof may be 7.5 metres (25 feet) wide and 1.5 metre high. Each cluster of chambers has a common tunnel entrance from the “basement.”" I have to admit I was pretty fascinated by it. One nest had made a tree fall down and I wanted to go take a close look but my guide warned me off saying snakes often take up residence.
Floating gentle through the air above the great sand dunes of Sossusvlei in Namibia. This was my first ( and only so far) hot air balloon ride and it was just incredibly beautiful. The color of the dunes softens and lightens as the sun rises, but at this perfect moment they were fairly glowing a stark orange color as the bits of rusted iron in the sand shows through. Travel is an amazing thing, there are wonders in this world, not just far away but in this country, in this state, in this city and in your life if you take the time to look for them.
Find the wonder in your life my friends, it is there in the land and the people around you.
http://balloon-safaris.com/ are the ones that took me up I believe
The view of the Dunes and dessert from above is a sight that will forever dwell in the highlight real of my minds eye
