  • I would not usually consider a garden a must-see experience, but I am really glad a local told us to visit Hamilton Gardens. The experience of wandering through a maze of hedges that open into perfectly cultivated gardens plucked complete from other countries and other eras was quite possibly the closest I will ever come to feeling like Alice in Wonderland come to life. You never know what magical sight waits around the next bend in the path.

  • A few kilometres downstream from Lake Taupo the river changes to some rapids for a short distance. When the rapids finish there is a drop which creates a waterfall. It all ends with this scene which is stunning. Only a 30 second walk from the car park to the river this shot was taken about a 5 minute walk further downstream on the main track at sunrise.

We enjoyed the clean, spacious rooms with high ceilings. The location was also very convenient, being close to parking and dining options. The hotel is also close to an affiliated gym which was nice, although the gym had limited operating hours on weekends.

Overall, a lot of things stood out, especially the clean bathroom and how they managed to fit both a washer and dryer in it. Had kitchenette but as only staying two nights did not use as had a good choice of well priced cafes only a stones through away.

Helpful and courteous staff thank you. Good size room with comfy bed and good shower but the sofa needed cleaning and there were some dirty glasses/crockery which wasn't great. The 'stacking' car park platform was challenging for a large SUV to fit into.

The staff at this hotel is very accommodating and helpful and should be commended. Unfortunately this area has a large homeless population that made walking locally challenging especially later at night. Street noise is also an issue for sleeping.

Room was good but had a funky layout. Utilization of space was out of balance. A number of items needed some TLC. Overall it was functional. Reasonably safe area. Secure parking was limited so we needed to park in the street. Parking in Hamilton is a little tricky with varying systems and times of enforcement. Staff at hotel were warm and friendly.

The room was clean. I liked the idea of the clothes washing machine but did not use it. They said there was breakfast, and I guess they did. Yoghurt, bread, butter and juice were in the refrigerator. They said there was parking but I was told it was full my entire stay, so I guess there was not parking. But it was quiet and the staff seemed nice.

I loved this area, having stayed by the port the last time. The hotel was clean and very comfortable. The front desk was helpful and friendly. They had umbrellas in a stand for guests. Up the street are lovely restaurants, shops and pubs.
