Grenaa is the capital of Djursland and is connected to both Anholt and Sweden. As the town is right next to the Kattegat, you can relax on Grenaa Strand (Grenaa Beach) if you travel there in the summer. There are lots of activities to enjoy, such as playing beach volleyball. Take a trip to Anholt Island, which is located in the middle of the Kattegat and is home to Denmark’s unique desert belt.
Also visit the Kattegatcentret (Kattegat Centre) during your stay in Grenaa, and see 250 different marine animals, both in and out of the water. You will have the opportunity to don a diving suit and get in the water with the sharks, but you can also enjoy watching the animals from the shore at little more of a distance and from behind the glass. There are marine animals from around the world, and they are ready to give you an unforgettable experience.
At Grenaa’s best viewpoint, you can visit Baunhøj Mølle (Baunhøj Mill), located 37 m above sea level. The mill is still operating on a voluntary basis, and visitors can see flour being produced. Several events and exhibitions also take place there during the year, so a visit to the mill should be a memorable one.
If you want to venture further out, Grenaa Plantage (Grenaa Plantation) is worth a visit. The plantation is close to the town and the beach, and has several hiking and cycling paths you can use. You can, for example, see the gorgeous forest lake, which is a great place to enjoy a packed lunch. Further up the coast, you will find Karlby og Sangstrup Klinter (Karlby and Sangstrup Cliffs), where you will get to see bryozoan limestone and even find fossils on the beach.
To get to Grenaa, we recommend flying to nearby Aarhus Airport, operating flights to and from London. From this location, it’s just a 25-minute drive to Grenaa. You can also take buses 212 and 122 to get to the town, with a slightly longer journey time of 45 minutes.
