Gabo Island

Travel Guide

The lighthouse on Gabo Island guards the eastern entrance to Bass Strait in #Australia. It is an active navigation lighthouse and weather station for the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.
It was built in 1853 from red granite sourced on the island. The wind blew down the windbreak wall, so buttresses were added for stability.
We went to the top for perfect 360 degree views on a blue sky day.
Access to the island is generally by boat and one can stay overnight!

Gabo Island Lighthouse Reserve is operated by Parks Victoria, who can be contacted for overnight stays in the Caretaker's accommodation.
Chance Brothers & Co. - Lighthouse Engineers & Constructors from near Birmingham, England commenced building the lighthouse in 1860.
I was fascinated by the local red granite, which is said to be the second hardest granite in the world.

8.2/10 Very Good! (179 reviews)
Great spot! Loved the room (it was large, and had a nice clean, fresh decor) - great to park out front, then have a second back door out to the pool. Nice pool/grassed area, and enjoyed a good meal in the pub. Really enjoyed the stay here, thanks!

8.6/10 Excellent! (192 reviews)
We stayed in a cabin. Simple accommodation, with lots of natural light, and was surrounded by trees and a native garden. Clean and neat inside. The beds were clean and comfortable. Best of all was the friendly and approachable service by the owners. I would definitely stay here again.
