Le Lion d'Or

"This family owned hotel is in the heart of Cauterets. The hotel is older and is evident when you walk the stairs and hallways where you can feel the slant in the floors. The room was very large and clean, with older french style furniture and curtains. The bathroom is very modern and had a large soaking tub. Like many French bathrooms, the toilet was in a separate “closet” outside the main bathroom, and although this is a bit odd at least this one had a hand sink inside. The breakfast was typical French but extra special because it included homemade breads, jams and fresh squeezed orange juice. The hotel is centrally located to everything and had great walkability. Free parking is available on the back street of the hotel. The hotel has a lovely courtyard on the first floor, and the surprise was seeing the eight tortoises, who have been in the family for generations that the family cares for. The gondola wasn’t open yet when we visited. Cauterets is a charming town and wish we could have stayed longer. We had a fantastic meal at Natural Takka restaurant and liked the food so much we ate there 2 nights in a row! We bought new hiking shoes at La Cordee shop where we had excellent service. She measured our feet for size and found out the hiking shoes we were wearing were too small, so we ditched the ones we had and walked out with our new ones and feet feeling much happier. The spa is directly behind the hotel. Staff was wonderful and very helpful."

"This hotel was perfect for us, we rented an apartment which worked great for two adults and our two teens. We were very comfortable and able to walk easily to town. Also, the staff was very friendly and helpful whenever we had questions or needed anything."

"Quirky (in a good way) hotel in a very convenient location; hard to beat in relation to beach and centre ville access! Truly beautiful, compact town with a great range of restaurants and bars; although more suited to slightly older clientele. Loved our stay and the staff were very attentive. Breakfast buffet was to a good standard and the room was compact but was well fitted out and clean."

"I was there for just one night. The staff was very helpful helping me park and accommodating my early checkout (well before any of the staff was set to arrive for the day). It's just a 5 minute walk to the beach and the beautiful castle, with over a dozen restaurants to choose from. The room was small, but it had a cute balcony and was clean and comfortable. The mattress was very firm. There is no elevator, so I had to drag my suitcase up to the third floor using the stairs. Overall a good stay."

"Had a one night stay, ate in the restaurant, food and service were excellent. You get what you pay for and this luxury stay was well worth the money. Breakfast was plentiful with all tastes catered for. Can’t really find anything to complain about."
