The charming Swedish town of Falkenberg abounds with natural attractions. Marvel at the beautiful sea, the lakes and ocean meadows in its surrounding nature reserves. Take a refreshing swim in the Kattegatt at Skrea Beach or Glommen.
Walk along the coast and marvel at the natural scenery which impresses regardless of the weather. Why not try a hiking route like Laxpromenaden or Hallandsleden? Those who seek an active holiday can go canoeing on Atran River or try out the Frisbee Golf Course.
Falkenberg is situated on the Swedish West Coast, around 100 km (60 miles) south of Gothenburg, and belonged to Denmark until 1645. In the 11th century the Danish king built the castle Falkenberg, which became the foundation of the town. The name means "falcon mountain", and is said to stem from the fact that the castle was a popular spot for falconry. Visit St Laurentii Church from around 1300, and cross the historic Falkenberg Toll Bridge.
Visit the beautiful Falkenberg harbour, and watch the boats that dock here in summer. Go for a stroll along the sea front and dine in one of the excellent restaurants. The town is famous for its delicious salmon, which you also find in abundance in Laxbutiken a short drive inland. Go salmon fishing in Atran River, a popular angling spot since the 19th century, where anglers travel from all over the world.
Jazz is very popular in Falkenberg, and every summer the town hosts a jazz festival with performances by skilled Swedish and international musicians. If you find yourself in town on a rainy day, you can spend the day at the bargain warehouse Gekas in Ullared, a short drive from Falkenberg. Find clothes, electronics and household goods at fantastic prices, but prepare yourself for the queues unless you come very early in the morning.
Get to Falkenberg by train or bus from Gothenburg, which has the closest international airport, or rent a car and drive. The small town is easy to get around on foot or by bike, but to visit the areas around it you need a car.
