Kitchen was great, didn't go skiing as summer, clean facilities and secure. All in all great.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
We enjoyed our overnight stay. The facilities were sufficient and the online check in worked for us. The wifi was a bit intermittent though unfortunately.
Great budget location for exploring and hiking the park. Kitchen gets busy and was missing spoons (common issue in shared kitchens- we had our own so it wasn’t a problem, somewhat dated and mostly clean. Liked the easy self check-in as well. Not a rowdy or loud hostel- we stayed here with our kids in a family room and had a great sleep and stay.
Nice and cheap stay. Noisy kids running up and down the hallway (but thats not the accommodations fault.) Easy drive to Whakapapa so good spot!
Noisy heater fan in bedroom when it was closed.
Very affordable, convenient location. Hoping the guests care more about the cleanliness.

Not to far from the center. My family likes entertainment area specifically the movies room serect. The first night cold in the room but the staff fixed the issue next day.
Great stay. It took a little while to get used to the fact that this property is unmanned but it actually worked very well. Check in was easy. The kitchen was well stocked. The shower pressure was great - although the shower is protected only by a curtain so not super private but wasn’t an issue. The bed was comfy. We stayed in a private room which even had a smart tv! Hostel luxury! Would definitely recommend. It is in the middle of nowhere but easy to access Whakapapa village and the other attractions in the area

We stayed 2 nights in the ‘deluxe’ double room No 4 directly behind reception.
The self check-in process was very easy to use.
I suspect like everyone else we were there to do the Alpine Crossing. So in that context it suited us fine, only a few minutes drive to the pickup point. The room was en-suite, the shower was okay once it warmed up and it had a decent TV with a range of channels.
The kitchen was well equipped.
Overall very good value.
I liked the family room because of the heating was excellent, However the backpackers needs staff as there were guest hogging amenties such as moive room and kitch area gets over crowded

Disliked: Staff & service
Tongariro park was on fire and closed. I messaged the hotel on hotels.com to enquire about the situation as roads were closed and a big area was evacuated. No answer from them.
You can get into their warm reception area without a key - no problem - but (as there is no receptionist there) keep their phone number handy in case you have a problem signing in.
Unfortunately, my stay was very disappointing. The kitchen was often dirty and poorly maintained, and basic utensils like spoons were missing. It was also extremely crowded, mostly because a group of staff members from France were constantly occupying the common areas. They were not polite, did not even say hello, and regularly left a mess behind after cooking.
The bathroom was also unclean, and toilet paper was frequently missing, which was very inconvenient. Sleeping in the room was difficult because of constant noise coming from the kitchen. People were having loud gatherings late into the night, making it impossible to rest properly.
Overall, the lack of cleanliness, organization, and respect for other guests made this stay very uncomfortable. I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for a quiet and clean accommodation.
My first time here. I decided to stay a night on my way up north. My sleep was not good. There was a machine sound that came on and off nearby keeping me awake; a generator or something. The light from the passageway leaked in the cracks around the door; had to put bags in front to stop the light coming through bottom of door. The mattress seemed like it was not flat and was hard to sleep on; wasn't sure if it was the mattress or an uneven floor, I think the mattress; hard to find a flat spot to sleep on; or maybe it was the bed frame itself. My back didn't feel that great in the morning; didn't get as much sleep as I would have liked. The room I was in was Room 14.
