De Panne is a seaside resort near the French border and is a great place to spend a relaxing holiday at the seaside. Enjoy the nature, go on a day trip to France and visit museums on 20th-century war history.
Although there was a settlement here in the Middle Ages, De Panne didn't become a seaside resort for the rich residents of Veurne until the end of the 18th century. After the Second World War tourism picked up again and today the village is a popular holiday destination for all ages.
History buffs will love De Panne. The region played an important role in the First and Second World Wars. For example, you can visit bunkers and tunnels at the Openluchtmuseum Atlantikwall (Atlantic Wall Open Air Museum) which is a 30-minute drive from the village. You can also go to Ypres Salient and see old German and English trenches. And of course there's Dunkirk just over the French border.
If the kids are with you, take them to the nearby theme park Plopsaland. Nature lovers will enjoy the beautiful beaches and walking and cycling routes in the Westhoekreservaat.
The coast tram (Kusttram), a special line which connects the different villages along the Belgian coast, is a good way of exploring the coast. You can also hire bicycles or even walk to nearby villages. If you're travelling by car, you can park cheaply in the park and ride (P+R) parking lot at the train and bus station and take public transport into the village.
You can get to De Panne by car from Folkestone and it’s just a 40-minute drive from Calais. You can of course fly to Amsterdam or Brussels and hire a car there or even take the train to Antwerp and then the train to De Panne.
However you travel to De Panne, you will certainly enjoy this lovely seaside resort with its many historic sights and activities for young and old.
