Nørrebro

Copenhagen

A riverside with a row of colorful buildings, a wooden boathouse, and a small dock.
A tree with pink blossoms, a curved road, and buildings in the background.
A red brick building with a sign that reads "Nørrebrohallen" and a café named "Le Rouge" in front of it.
A city street with a distinctive black and white striped road, parked cars, and a large orange building in the background.
An aerial view of a city with a river, industrial buildings, and a mix of modern and historic architecture.

Nørrebro, Copenhagen's old working-class neighbourhood, is now a hip, lively and multicultural area, where you can experience the best of modern Copenhagen.

Nørrebro is a lively and colourful neighbourhood where people from all classes and various ethnic backgrounds live side by side. This means that during your city break to Nørrebro, you will get to experience a great variety of shops, cafés and restaurants only a few minutes away from central Copenhagen.

The district gets its name from Nørrebrogade, a road that used to lead in and out of Copenhagen's Northern Gate. The Copenhagen ramparts were opened in the mid-1800s, and this allowed industry to develop in the area. Nørrebro's massive transformation from working-class neighbourhood to hip quarter has come as a result of redevelopment in recent years, bringing young people, students and artists to the area.

Take a walk and visit the Assistens Kirkegården (Assistens Cemetery), where famous Danes such as Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard are buried, and keep walking towards Nørrebro Bryghus (Nørrebro Brewery), Denmark's first carbon-neutral brewery, where you can enjoy wonderful food and exceptional beer. In the evening, enjoy comedy performances at Nørrebro Theatre. Don't forget to go shopping two great places are Elmegade and Jægersborggade.

Nørrebro is the most populated district of Copenhagen, so get ready for a lively cityscape with lots of people and plenty of things to see and do. And that's the Nørrebro experience in a nutshell: walking around the streets and experiencing everyday life, visiting the halal butcher or the greengrocer and sitting down in one of the many lovely cafés or restaurants.

When travelling around Nørrebro, it's a good idea to walk so that you can take in everything. Nørrebro is also well-connected with the rest of Copenhagen by both bus and train. The easiest way to travel is to use the city buses, which go from the main station (Hovedbanegården), and the metro and bus both travel directly to Copenhagen Airport.

A holiday to Nørrebro gives you the opportunity to experience the best of multicultural Denmark, and you will also have easy access to experience all of Copenhagen's other attractions.
