Bygdøy

Travel Guide
Oslo featuring a house
A favoured escape for locals, especially in summer. There are magnificent hiking and bathing areas, and a great selection of museums to choose from.

Bygdøy is a peninsula in the western part of Oslo with plenty of things for visitors to enjoy. The magnificent hiking trails has made Bygdøy a popular escape destination ever since the 1800s. Bygdøy was an island until the 1600s, but uplift, sedimentation and filling have gradually connected it to the mainland. Dyna Lighthouse is also on Bygdøy and provides a beautiful venue for parties.

The popular beach near Huk has several volleyball courts and also a great restaurant. You can visit some of the country's most popular museums and board the Polar Ship Fram to see how the crew lived during the arduous voyages in the Arctic Ocean.

You can visit Oscarshall Castle, which is considered to be one of the most important Neo-Gothic buildings in Norway. You can also visit Vikingskipshuset, the Kon-Tiki Museum and the Norwegian Folk Museum, to name just some of the museums here. Bygdøy’s close proximity to the capital means that many of those travelling to Bygdøy also visit the numerous sights on offer in Norway’s capital, Oslo.

On Bygdøy, you can hire a bike to explore the many trails or find a hidden spot on the beach to sunbathe for the afternoon. The beach gets busy when the weather is good so make sure you arrive early to pick the best spot. Be aware that several places on Bygdøy are protected, especially with two nature reserves in the area.

Gardermoen is the closest airport from here, you can easily travel to Oslo by public transport. There are regular buses from Oslo to Bygdøy as well as a ferry. Hire a car if you want to travel around and explore the area at your own pace.

A holiday in Bygdøy is a calm and relaxing break from the hectic city life in nearby Oslo. You can enjoy magnificent hikes in beautiful scenery along the seafront. The many museums also provide fantastic cultural activities for your holiday in Bygdøy.
