Burgau is a quiet fishing village, situated between Lagos and Sagres in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, known for its sheltered beach. If your idea of the perfect holiday is to relax in the sun and swim in the sea, this village will provide everything your heart desires.
Relax in the Beach: Praia do Burgau
Sheltered from the wind by the cliffs on a small cove is the lovely Praia do Burgau. On the clifftops above you can see the ruins of a 16th Century tower, which you can visit if you don’t mind the trek. Around the beach, the natural landscape of the protected area makes it a peaceful place to disconnect from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Although the beach doesn’t have a Blue Flag (simply because it lacks showering facilities) it has some great restaurants and bars facing the sea, as well as a car park just across the sea.
Rent a Small Boat or a Canoe
The best way to explore Praia do Burgau’s beautiful blue sea is by boat. Kayaks, canoes and other small vessels can be rented for a day’s adventuring. Why not take a trip to another small beach, just west of Praia de Burgau, which popular for scuba diving and fishing.
Dry Land
If that’s not enough activity for one holiday, or if you’d just rather keep dry, then visit the local Sports Centre. Here you can play tennis, squash, badminton, table tennis, football and join in with adults’ and kids’ sports nights, zumba or aerobics classes. You can also sunbathe around the pool and have a drink or a bite to eat.
If you’d like something a little more relaxing, indulge in treatments from the wellness centre, join a yoga workout or treat yourself to a nice massage.
For some culture, walk along the historical centre of town and admire the whitewashed typical architecture of the Algarve. Visit the nearby towns like Sagres, home to some of the most impressive landscapes in the region or visit Lagos, one of the most visited cities in the Algarve, which offers unique views of rock formations at Ponta da Piedade.
Shopping
There are small shops and mini-markets in Burgau that stock all the basics, along with bakeries selling fresh bread and even hair salons. If you’re after wider selection of good, head to the nearest supermarket in Luz or one of the main shopping malls around the Algarve.
Food and Drinks
On Burgau’s main street you’ll find a great selection of restaurants that serve local dishes and delicacies, along with great international cuisine like Indian or Italian. If you do choose to eat local, make sure you visit the main town, Vila do Bispo, where you’ll find establishments that serve “perceves” (goose barnacles), a real regional classic.
