Discover a broad beach protected by tall headlands, explore a wilderness reserve, learn about local Aboriginal culture and camp overnight in this laid-back village.

Broken Head is a small coastal village next to the secluded sands of the beach of the same name. Experience the North Coast’s natural beauty when you explore Broken Head’s beautiful headlands and nature reserve. Pitch a tent and wake up with adventure on your doorstep. Cast a fishing line in the ocean swell or set out on one of the exciting nature trails winding through the coastal rainforest.

Look out over Broken Head Beach as you walk down to the golden sands. Spread out a towel and relax or dive into the clear ocean waters. Enjoy a refreshing swim under the supervision of lifeguards or wax your surfboard for the notorious Broken Head right-hander.

Stroll along the extended stretch of sand and find a spot to cast a fishing line. Broken Head is a popular spot for hooking blackfish and drummer. After you make a catch, grab a table at the barbecue shelters behind the beach and grill a satisfying picnic lunch.

The Broken Head Nature Reserve south of the beach is a great place for exploring the idyllic rainforest. Follow the trail to the Three Sisters lookout and enjoy staggeringly beautiful views across the surging ocean and the rocky headlands toward the lighthouse on Cape Byron. From here, view the horizon in spring and winter to see humpback whales breaching offshore. Look up to spot sea eagles circling above, ready to pounce on ocean prey. See more birdlife in the rainforest canopy as you continue your stroll around the nature reserve trails. Bring binoculars for the best chance of spotting wildlife from the headlands.

Broken Head is about a 20-minute drive south from the main town of Byron Bay. Whether you’re indulging in a seaside getaway or taking the kids for an adventure-filled vacation, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Broken Head.
