Bogense is a wonderful town in North Funen with a charming historic quarter and a large marina, surrounded by beaches, salt marshes, forests and lush green areas.
Bogense's town centre is packed with charming historic buildings, including a beautiful church with a distinctive spire which was used as a landmark by mariners over several centuries. The high street goes right down to the water's edge, where you'll find a large marina full of luxury yachts from all over the world, especially in the summer months.
Even on a short weekend to Bogense, you'll be able to see all this charming town has to offer, from its wonderful old merchant homes and log cabins, to Erik Menved's Café from 1543 – the oldest building in Bogense – and Denmark’s tiniest home (just 248 square feet). This cute little house can be found right in the heart of the central square - a lovely spot at the town's highest point of elevation. You'll also find the Bogense Church of St. Nicholas in the same place, with its characteristic, tall spire and its unique tower which was unconventionally built at the East side of the building. Both the altar and the pulpit date from the time of King Christian IV (1577-1648).
Take a trip to Aebelo during your holiday in Bogense – an unpopulated, protected island with breathtaking beaches, arboreal forests, salt marshes and grassy fields that are home to wild long-horned Mouflon rams and fallow deer. And be sure to visit some of the large estates and farms in Bogense and the surrounding area as well. Most of the estates are privately-owned and closed to the public, but the Harridslevgaard Castle is open to visitors at various times throughout the year. The castle was first mentioned in King Valdemar’s Jordebog (a medieval registry of feudal property owners) in the year 1231, although the current Renaissance-era building wasn't constructed until several centuries later in 1606. You can enter and see over 16,000 square feet of the castle, including the grand salon and the vaulted cellar which lies beneath the ground floor. If the weather permits, you can even take a lovely stroll through the park.
There are also many wonderful hiking trails around Bogense, especially at Sonderso and Langeso Forest, where you can see the idyllic Langeso Castle Chapel and Langeso Castle.
You can reach Bogense by taking a flight to Billund or Kastrup Airport. From there, it's easiest to just hire a car and drive to Bogense.
