Just a short journey to the south of Dublin citycentre, the suburb of Blackrock is a perfect placeto stay while visiting the Irish capital. As well as easy access to all thecity centre attractions, Blackrock has more thanenough museums, sporting arenas, bars and restaurants of its own for anyonewanting to savour the local culture.

How to get to Blackrock

Blackrock is just a 15 minute trip on the DART, thelocal suburban rail system, from the centre of Dublin and there are many busesthat serve the area. There’s also an airport bus that stops inBlackrock so getting in and out of the town issimple - in fact, there’s even a ferry port just further along the coast withroutes to Wales and the Isle of Man.

Shopping in Blackrock

The bustling shopping area is centred on Main Street,near to the DART station, with the BlackrockShopping Centre close by. For something more traditional you could savour thelively atmosphere and unique character of BlackrockMarket in the centre of town. Independent traders sell anythingfrom antiques to candles and there’s a mouth-watering variety of food availabletoo. Plan your visit here though as the main market is only open on weekendsand bank holidays.

Sport in Blackrock

Ireland is well known as a sport loving nation andBlackrock provides plenty of opportunities for youto get involved. Situated near Dublin Bay, water sports are well catered for inBlackrock and, just north of the town, is thestunning Aviva Stadium, a 50,000 capacity sporting arena that plays host torugby and football internationals as well as world class concerts.

Relaxing in Blackrock

For a relaxing afternoon, BlackrockPark is perfect for the whole family. Located to the north ofthe town this picturesque green area boasts a children’s play area, cyclingpaths and stunning views of the coastline. The tranquillity and natural beautyof the park is the perfect way to wind down after enjoying some of the city’smore lively charms.

Museums and Learning in Blackrock

Children will love Imaginosity in nearby Sandyford. Itis Dublin’s only museum specifically aimed at toddlers and youngsters and theycan get a real hands-on learning experience while discovering the creative sideof the scientific world.

For lovers of literature, the James Joyce Tower andMuseum is just down the coast at Sandycove. Overlooking the bay, it housesmemorabilia from the celebrated writer’s life and the tower is a star in itsown right, as the setting for the opening scene of Ulysses.

Irish Art in Blackrock

There are a number of galleries inBlackrock showcasing the very best in Irish art.From contemporary 20th century paintings to ceramics, Ireland has arich cultural history and many of its finest artists are exhibited at theWaldock Gallery in town.

For those wanting to delve deeper into Irish culture,the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann on Belgrave Square showcases the very bestin Irish music and dance. There are live performances every night but thehighlight has to be the weekly ceilidh (group Irish dance) on aFriday.
