Learn more about Birsay

Come to Birsay and enjoy its ruins, boating, and beaches.

Fishermen's Huts at Sand Geo, Marwick The Marwick fishermen started using Sand Geo in 1896 after a tramp steamer beached at their usual landing place to the north. The three huts were built between 1898 and 1913. The winch used for hauling up the boats is said to come from the wreck of the steamer. The huts were restored in 1984 by the Scottish Conservation Projects Trust in association with the Orkney Islands Council.
