Excursions and city trips to the Baltic Sea are not only for those who enjoy swimming and hiking.

The area also invites visitors to explore time-honoured Hanseatic cities and go shopping along gorgeous sea promenades. The landscape around the Baltic Sea boasts white sandy beaches, breathtaking steep cliffs and endless meadows. In the midst of this idyll lie lovely cities with a pleasant atmosphere and a long history. Whether as part of a longer tour or on a short trip, taking a city trip to the Baltic Sea is most definitely worth it.

Stralsund, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of those gems along the Baltic Sea. The city impresses with its vibrant past, historic buildings and unique sights and is a must for every city traveller. While on a mini-break in this special Hanseatic city, be sure to visit the Oceanum. It is a maritime museum with a number of aquariums and more than 8,700 m² exhibition grounds. The bathing paradise Hansedom with water slides and wellness offers enjoyment for young and old.

Should you prefer a swim in the sea, be sure not to miss the Baltic Sea beach at Kühlungsborn. The fine sand of the Baltic Sea, the water with the environmental seal of quality ‘Blue Flag’ for its excellent quality as well as the elegant sea promenade invite you to swim and go for a stroll. If you prefer more action, be sure to visit the sports beach, a popular meeting point for the active youth of Kühlungsborn.

A trip to the Baltic Sea impresses with breathtaking landscapes with staggeringly steep cliffs and fantastic views. One of the most popular destinations for leisure excursions on the island of Rügen is Cape Arkona. Apart from the impressive cliffs, visitors can marvel at two lighthouses and two historic military bunkers. During the Middle Ages, the last fortification of the Slavs was located here and the ruins can still be visited.

Not far from Cape Arkona awaits the national park Jasmund. The impressive chalk cliffs ‘Königsstuhl’ and ‘Wissower Klinken’ are subjected to constant erosion and might therefore not be around for much longer. The largest continuous beech forest along the German Baltic Coast is not cultivated and left to itself which is why it has become a home for many endangered animal and plant species. Consequently, some of this fascinating part of nature was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Due to the maritime climate along the Baltic Coast, visitors should definitely pack sturdy shoes as well as a windcheater or a raincoat. A car is the best choice of transport in the area. This way, you remain mobile and can head for the destination of your choice any time.
