The city was founded during the British colonial period. It escaped much of the destruction during the Civil War. Look for gorgeous antebellum mansions presiding over its tree-lined streets.

Continue the literary theme at the Uncle Remus Museum at Turner Park. The museum explores the life and work of author Joel Chandler Harris, who worked at Turner Park as a young apprentice. He drew inspiration from the slave stories he heard here to create his beloved Uncle Remus and "Little Man" tales.

Augusta is a 3-hour drive from Atlanta, the capital of Georgia. You can also fly into Augusta's regional airport.
